e3coal fuel is produced through a process of torrefaction, during which water content and other volatile organic compounds are removed from biomass under low-oxygen conditions that yield a solid, fully hydrophobic biofuel with better physical and energetic properties compared to traditional fossil coal.
The primary market for biocoal is co-firing power plants. Co-firing, the process of mixing biomass together with coal in traditional coal-fired power plants, presents a low-cost pathway towards reducing CO₂ emissions.
